Daily diary of Tilford describes the movements and engagements of the Union Army throughout Ky., Tenn., Ga., and Ala. He notes his work and vividly recounts the boredom and excitement of day to day soldiering. He witnesses the battles at Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and Nashville, as well as numerous skirmishes. Also included is a letter to his parents from Chattanooga as well as two letters of family news from his mother in Indianapolis. One volume is the 1864 diary of Luna A. Meeks who married Tilford in 1866. It contains family news and news of her travels. There are also miscellaneous papers and clippings. The last two volumes of Tilford's diary concern his return to Indianapolis and his study at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York.
